“I am so excited about the wines coming out of Portugal – it really is the place to head if you’re looking for incredible value and even more incredible flavors.”
Our Portugal expert, Jehan Sacaze
Just wait until you taste Jehan’s latest discovery – a brilliant taste of Portugal’s flagship red, Touriga Nacional. It’s from fourth-generation Leonor Freitas (who was named ‘Comendadora,’ the equivalent of knighthood) by the Portuguese government for her services to the wine industry. As you can imagine with that title, she knows her stuff.
The wine hails from the premium Vinha do Fava vineyard, situated in the warm, sandy soils of Fernando Pó, a tiny district in the Peninsula de Setúbal. Though it basks in intense sunshine all day, it’s also only four miles from the Atlantic Ocean – all those brisk sea breezes lock in intense aromatics and keep the grapes from over-ripening.
Leonor acquired this special site back in 2000 and immediately recognized its potential for growing fine Touriga Nacional. Today it’s winemaker Jaime Quendera’s go-to spot when he’s planning on making one of his higher-end creations for Leonor. And with very good reason – more than 60 of the estate’s 800 medals are golds awarded to wines made from this vineyard alone. So it’s not really a surprise that this eponymous red sports more than FIVE gold medals, plus double-gold from San Francisco, ‘Grand Gold’ from Mundus Vini, and ‘Best in Show’ honors from Prodexpo.
Look forward to spicy, black-fruit flavors on the rich, luscious palate. Soft tannins frame the juicy, fresh finish and make this a winning match for a feast of game meats or hearty beef dishes.
