Vimioso 2018 2018

When our Portugal expert, Jehan, tasted Vimioso, he could hardly believe the quality: “It’s a dead-ringer for Châteauneuf-du-Pape at a much friendlier price.” How is that possible?

Situated in the heart of Portugal, Tejo has a warm, dry climate (just like the Rhône). Here, the renowned Falua estate’s prime-sited vineyards are strewn with galets roulés, the same stones credited with giving Châteauneuf its extra flavor oomph. During the day, the large, flat stones trap the sun’s heat. Overnight, they release the heat, providing warmth to the vines. This allows the grapes to ripen more evenly and develop even more concentrated, complex aromas and flavors, as you’ll see with Vimioso.

This rich red blend of Cabernet, Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), Syrah and Alicante Bouchet was barrel aged for 12 months. It absolutely overflows with cherry, plum and black currant flavors with subtle herb and toasty spice complexity on a long finish.

Vimioso will be a delicious match for barbecued fare like juicy burgers, pork ribs or grilled vegetable kebabs—you really can’t go wrong. And in the cooler months, try it with a pot roast or hearty stew.
