Velho é Novo 2018

Forget oak barrels.
Wines in Portugal’s Alentejo region have been aged in amphorae (i.e. large clay vessels) since Roman times. And while many winemakers today have abandoned this ancient practice, Alexandre Relvas honors the tradition – and this exciting red tastes all the better for it.

He hand harvested his finest Trincadeira – one of the region’s oldest grapes, and Alexandre’s favorite – and allowed them to ferment with their native yeasts. The final touch? Velho é Novo (‘Old and New’) was aged six months in clay amphorae.

You’ll note a paler color (Alexandre pressed the grapes very gently to preserve the pure fruit character), but don’t let the delicate hue fool you: this elegant wine is smooth and packed with bright, red-berry flavor. Fantastic with poultry dishes or a variety of vegetarian-friendly meals. An exciting must-try!
