Every great wine starts in the vineyard, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have a special advantage. Their thick skins help create beautifully dark, inky colors and intense fruit flavors in the final wine—as you’ll enjoy in this new exclusive, that picked up a gold medal from the San Francisco International Wine Competition.

Thick Skin hails from California’s Lodi, “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). In cooler climates, Cabernet’s thick skins can prevent the grapes from ripening. But between Lodi’s brilliant sunshine and the long, warm growing season, Cabernet grapes plenty of time to reach their flavorful peak.

The final touch? Six months in French oak barrels, which imparted toasty spice notes to the Cab’s rich black currant, blackberry and licorice flavors. For maximum enjoyment, decant the wine an hour before serving to open up its complex aromas and soften the texture. Then, pair with roasted meats, barbecued fare or a plate of smoky cheeses.
