La Cantera Reserva 2013
Award Winner
Berliner Wein Trophy
Gold Medal - 2016 DE
“Spain is firing on all cylinders,” says Wine Spectator. With its flavor-boosting old vines, fruit-rich native grapes and traditional emphasis on barrel aging, the country is producing superb, age-worthy wines. And, because many of her regions aren't on the average U.S. consumer’s radar (yet), the value is still unbeatable.
In Cariñena (“home to some of the best-value reds in Spain, if not the world,” according to Decanter), the flavors get even deeper. And no one knows how to harness all that full-fruited charm with as much finesse as Javier Domeque. He's the man behind our hugely popular El Bombero and Gran Bombero reds. This perfectly mature Reserva, proudly sporting a gold medal from Berliner Wein Trophy 2016, is just further proof of his winemaking skill – it’s also one of our most popular Spanish wines.
Exactly the type of serious flavor and value you can expect from modern Spain, La Cantera is the product of Javier's prized Tempranillo vines. These 65-year-old heirlooms produce tiny amounts of grapes with HUGE flavor — yet, the clusters are so small, they fit right in the palm of your hand. A 14-month slumber in oak (followed by another six-plus years in bottle) means you can look forward to a seriously mellow, complex wine that's made for hearty, slow-cooked dishes.
Expressive raspberry and black fruit on the nose, with subtle toasty vanilla notes. On the palate, La Cantera is well-balanced and smooth, with layer after layer of luscious red berries and a long finish.
