Duca di Cardino Chianti Riserva 2015

The Barbanera family have been making world-class wines, working in some of Tuscany’s best-regarded sites, since the 1930s. Their classy Chianti Riserva was named for Barbanera ancestor Orazio Barbanera, who became an honorary duke when he defeated the Florentines in a field of cardinos (artichokes) – hence the label.

“Generations later, I strive to make wines fit for a Duke and this Chianti Riserva would, I believe, make Orazio proud,” says Marco Barbanera. He goes on to explain that this rare Riserva “strikes an elegant balance between a classic sour cherry fragrance and intriguing hints of licorice-infused mocha.”

Riserva means the wine’s been aged a bit longer – here, six months in large oak botti and several months in bottle before release – so you enjoy ‘royally’ delicious, extra-complex flavors of cherry, mocha, and fennel. Reserve this special red for big family meals (think a spread of meaty pastas, colorful roasted veggies, crusty garlic bread, and more). Or serve it as an aperitif, with antipasti.
