Blazing Star Malvasia Santa Barbara 2018
When you think of California wine, your first thought is probably of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. But talented winemakers across the Golden State also experiment with exciting, lesser-known grape varieties – with impressive results. Taste for yourself with this rare Malvasia Bianca.
Originally from Greece, Malvasia Bianca is one of the classic whites of the Mediterranean isles. While most famous for starring in Malmsey (a fortified wine from Portugal’s Madeira region), Malvasia Bianca comes in a variety of styles. This fine example is deliciously dry, and hails from California’s premium Santa Barbara County.
Thanks to a near-perfect growing season in 2018, the vineyards benefitted from warm temperatures that ripened grapes to perfection. Cooling Pacific Ocean breezes – funneled in by the region’s unique east-to-west valleys – helped retain freshness, allowing a longer ‘hang time’ on the vine and the development of intense flavors.
Named after a local wildflower (depicted on the label in a watercolor illustration by 20th-century artist Ernest Clayton), Blazing Star offers delicate floral aromas. Crisp and beautifully textured, the palate delivers ripe pear, white peach, and white nectarine flavors. Take inspiration from the coastal vineyards – and Malvasia Bianca’s island origins – and sip it beachside, poolside, or alongside fresh seafood dishes.
